Bond Election Update

Fire Station levy will go before voters again
Strong support for Department hampered by low voter turnout

Despite overwhelming support from voters participating in the August 21 primary election, the $27 million dollar levy proposed by the Northshore Fire Department fell short under state election laws. The construction bond would have paid for much-needed facilities expansion including a new headquarters building, fire station and training facility.

The issue needed a 60 percent majority vote to pass. 73 percent of voters said “yes” to the proposed construction bond. Under state law at least 5,849 ballots were also required to be cast but only 5,782 valid ballots were received—a shortfall of just 67 voters.
Election officials also challenged or rejected 124 ballots—including 83 mail-in ballots which were not postmarked on or before election day.

“It’s clear the community supports the department and recognizes the need for new facilities,” said Kae Peterson, chair of the Northshore Fire Department Board of Commissioners. “I’m disappointed, of course, that the election could not be validated, but the citizenry’s support for this vital project is encouraging—and appreciated.”

The Department has already secured land for the new facilities, which would be located at the northwest corner of 73rd Avenue Northeast and 181st Street in Kenmore. Plans had called for construction to begin next summer.

Commissioner Peterson said the Department is planning to ask voters to go to the polls again next spring to approve the construction levy. If the proposed levy is approved next spring, the cost to the average homeowner living in the district would be roughly $8.50 per month, for 20 years. But with construction costs rising an average 15 percent a year, that could change unless voter approval is won early next year.

In an effort to increase voter turnout next spring, Peterson said the entire Department—from commissioners to fire fighters—will be working hard to provide community members with information about the bond issue.
