Exit Drills In The Home (E.D.I.T.H. Drills)

One of the most important life safety skills you can have is to know how to get out of your home quickly in the event of fire.

PLAN.....your escape. There is no time for planning when a fire occurs. Sit down with your family and make a step-by-step plan for escaping a fire.

DRAW A FLOOR PLAN of your home, marking two way out of every room - especially sleeping areas.

Once you GET OUT, STAY OUT! Never return to a burning building. Get out fast; don’t stop for anything. People who re-enter a burning building “just for a second” rarely get a second chance. The heat and smoke are overpowering. Fire fighters have the training, experience and protective equipment needed to enter burning buildings. If people or pets are trapped, fire fighters have the best chance of rescuing them. Once you are outside, go directly to your.......

MEETING PLACE, a pre-determined place outside your home where the members of your family will meet after escaping a fire. This allows you to account for the members in your family, and to inform the fire department if anyone is trapped inside the burning building.

PRACTICE your escape plan. Being familiar with your plan can help to reduce the confusion you might otherwise experience in an fire emergency. Make sure the bedroom windows open easily. If you must escape from the second floor, make sure there is a safe way to reach the ground.

PREPARE....Does everyone in your household know how to operate the locking mechanisms on the exit doors? Can they open windows quickly? If you live in a multi-family occupancy, and there is a fire, never use the elevator - use the stairs. Install, test and maintain smoke detectors outside every sleeping area and on every level of your home.

TEST DOORS BEFORE OPENING........feel the door with the back of your hand. If the door is hot, use an alternate escape route. If it’s cool, open it with caution, and proceed with caution.
TRAPPED?? Close the door between you and the fire. Stuff the cracks around the door to keep the smoke out. Stand by the window and signal for help by waving a light-colored cloth or a flashlight, or by blowing a whistle. If there’s a phone in the room, call the fire department and tell them exactly where you are.
CRAWL LOW UNDER SMOKE. Smoke contains deadly gases, and smoke rises. Cleaner air will be near the floor. So crawl low under smoke as you exit the burning building.
